Geometric Speciation

Geometric Speciation
A conceptual installation

The project looks at how software environments impact design production by exploring the generative possibilities and interaction between two dimensional and three dimensional virtual and material systems offered by advanced digital environments. By looking at a wide range of tools and techniques associated to digital ways of production and fabrication, this project's intention is to manifest the inherent complexity of the underlying processes of formal and organizational evolution. By experimenting with the conceptual process of design, materials, and production process.

Through short and intensive exercises, a series of prescribed and highly choreographed procedures were explored, combining both analog and digital media. The goal was to explore the inspirational object, the foot, and to find shapes and volumes that would create innovative composition. The object was explored not only through 3D modeling, and through physical prototypes to interpret the tectonic behavior of the final product.

Role: Solo Designer
Timeline: Design development 6 months
Tools: Rhino, research, Illustrator, Laser Cutter, Prototypes
Analytical Technique < Contours
Analytical Technique < Sectioning
Analytical Technique < Seeming and Unfolding
Analytical Technique < Kit of Parts
Analytical Technique < Orthographic
The drawing explorations were to find a design direction and in inspiration to point sourcing the prototype to create the final piece. These are small investigations of laser cut cardboard.
These are close up photos of a larger prototype. Final piece is in the works.
